Archived — Consultation on the integration of LMB-EG-08 with S-G-03 gas meter type approval specifications and further updates
Measurement Canada (MC) is consulting on the integration of LMB-EG-08 with S-G-03 gas meter type approval specifications and further updates. This consultation will be of primary interest to natural gas metering device manufacturers that are seeking type approval for a particular class, type or design of measuring device that can be used for trade measurement in Canada. The consultation period begins on , and ends on .
MC's specification LMB-EG-08 — Specifications for Approval of Type of Gas Meters and Auxiliary Devices was published in 1987 and provided design, composition, construction and performance specifications to which gas meters and auxiliary devices must conform in order to receive approval pursuant to the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act.
In 2008, MC published specification S-G-03 — Specifications for the Approval of Type of Gas Meters and Auxiliary Devices — Amendments to Measurement Canada specification LMB-EG-08, which included previously unpublished amendments to LMB-EG-08 that were being applied by the Approval and Calibration Services Laboratory since the 1990's.
To address important formatting issues associated with LMB-EG-08, MC has combined LMB-EG-08 and S-G-03 into one approval specification: S-G-03 (rev.1) — Draft specifications for the Approval of Type of Gas Meters, Ancillary Devices and Associated Measuring Devices. Consequently, LMB-EG-08 will become obsolete. The new specification consolidates and communicates all the applicable requirements that have changed since 2008, and are currently being applied during type approval evaluation. It also harmonizes Canada's requirements with international recommendations in OIML R 137-1 & 2 and R 140.
Concurrently, the following specifications will be revised to remove their applicable approval requirements and integrate them with S-G-03 (rev.1):
- PS-G-15 — Provisional Specifications for the Approval, Verification, Installation and Use of Fluidic Oscillation Meters
- PS-G-16 — Provisional Specifications for the Approval, Verification, Reverification, Installation and Use of Conditioning Orifice Plates
- S-G-04 — Specifications for Approval, Installation, Use and Verification of Flow Conditioners Used in Gas Measurement Systems
- S-G-06 — Specifications for the Approval, Verification, Reverification, Installation and Use of Cone-Shaped Differential Pressure Meters
MC specification PS-G-13 — Provisional Specifications and Procedures for the Approval of Correction Devices and Linearization Functions Incorporated in Meters and Flow Computers, published in 2006, has been included in S-G-03 (rev.1) and will become obsolete. The requirements in S-G-03 (rev.1) will be applied in accordance with engineering document GS-ENG-03-01 (rev.7) — Guidelines for the Approval Evaluation of Linearization Functions Incorporated in Meters and Flow Computers, which was created on the basis of PS-G-13.
Measuring devices that have been approved for use in trade by MC pursuant to the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act will maintain their approval but will be subject to bulletin GEN-26 — Modifications to approved weighing and measuring devices and electricity and gas meters, which establishes MC's policy requirements for reporting modifications to the design, composition or construction of these approved devices.

The public consultation documents are draft specification S-G-03 (rev.1) and a document which contains tables that are intended to facilitate the consultation process by comparing the requirements set forth in S-G-03 (rev.1) to those in the current MC approval specifications.
